Re-designing a kitchen is a big project, and selecting engineered wood flooring takes some consideration. Our clients decided on engineered oak flooring for their open plan family kitchen. Having moved into a large victorian property five years ago, gradually updating their home has been a labour of love.
WHAT ABOUT SPILLS AND MUDDY PAWS!
The south facing kitchen over looks a large garden. Opening bifold doors during the summer allows for inside/outside entertaining. This was an area of concern for our clients as this would potentially mean heavy footfall here. The question was could an engineered wood flooring withstand the every day use of a busy family home? There’s also Treacle’s muddy paws to consider! All our engineered wood floors have durable surface layer but it is always best to clean up any spills quickly.
We were able to address their concerns with absolute confidence. The quality of any engineered flooring is heavily reliant on the quality and depth of the veneer this is vitally important. At Sutton Timber we are totally confident that all our engineered floors are of the very best quality. We personally select the timber for all our flooring. The top veneer is a minimum of 5mm and bonded onto to a birch plywood base. This allows the floor to retain it’s stability.
Due to its construction, engineered flooring withstands changes in temperature, humidity and moisture. Adding a 10-15mm expansion gap around the edge of the room, allows the floor to comfortably deal with any atmospheric challenges. Throughout the kitchen and hallway, same width 200mm boards, allows continuity and flow from room to room. A wider board gives the rooms a broader appearance, opening out the space.
CAN I HAVE UNDERFLOOR HEATING?
Yes all our floors can be used with underfloor heating. We recommend consulting a qualified engineer to install the heating.
MAINTAINING YOUR ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING
We accept that all flooring will have some wear and tear. However, a little care keeps the flooring looking its best. (see our blog on maintaining a wood floor for more information). If after time you feel the floor needs a little TLC then it is perfectly possible to sand and reseal to restore it to its former glory. This is only possible if the veneer is thick enough as with all our engineered flooring. However, with general maintenance it is highly probable that you will never need to do this.
BENEFITS OF ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING
- Its sturdy and longlasting
- wood flooring in the kitchen brings warmth, and natural and timeless character to a kitchen.
- Unlike stone or tiles it is warm on your feet to the touch.
- It is renewable. You can restore any wear-and-tear over the years by sanding the top layer of the flooring. However, be aware this is dependent on the top layer thickness.
- Cheaper engineered flooring is available but most of have just 1-2mm top layer which will limit its life.
- Recyclable: For the eco-minded, wood flooring is easily recyclable. All our timber is sourced from sustainable forests throughout Britain and Europe
- Actively increases the value of your property. By introducing quality wooden flooring, contrary to cheap alternatives like vinyl or laminate flooring.
- Easy to clean and maintain.
