With a generous donation from Bungay Lions and Bungay Co-op the Falcon Meadow Community Trust decided to put the proceeds to the good of the community. They decided to commission a solid oak bench. Approaching our very own furniture maker Tom Jones they asked for a design which complimented the natural environment of the meadow and the River Waveney. So inspired by the curves of the river, Tom’s idea is a bench which incorporates two elongated curves – ‘a serpentine curve’. In order to achieve the bends Tom used five strips of 8mm oak glued them together and shaped these around a form. The result is a much stronger form than if cut from a solid piece.
Solid oak slats form the seat and back of the bench. Cut to shape, the slats follow the curves of this impressive 12ft long bench. It is anchored down by being bolted onto 60mm stainless steel angle iron rods . The supporting rods are driven deep into the ground to maintain maximum stability. Finished with a natural oil, allows the features of the grain to shine through.
Positioned downstream from the bridge the bench encourages visitors to walk along the riverbank to the end of the meadow. Now you can rest awhile and take in the fabulous view. It really is a very creative design and sits beautifully within this peaceful place.
Falcon Meadow was put up for sale by owners Ditchingham United Charities in 2012. With no time to fundraise to purchase it for the town, a local businessman stepped in and bought it. Deciding to sell it on in 2015, he agreed to sell to the town for the same price he’d paid. A rapidly formed steering group of five managed to raise sufficient funds and donations allowing completion of the purchase. The Falcon Meadow Community Trust is a registered charity and now owns the freehold of the meadow.
It is a place for recreation and leisure. Furthermore, the Trust aims are to encourage people of all ages and social backgrounds to use the meadow. By liasing with the Wildlife Trust and Environment Agency their vision is a long term wildlife and habitat management plan to increase native flora and fauna biodiversity throughout the meadow.
